UMPC - Frequently Asked Questions.

Q1. The computer does not turn On.
A1a. Please check you energy source and make sure it works.
A1b. Make sure your electrical connection is good.
Q2. Where do I find my Model Number and Microsoft® Windows® Product Key?
A2. The BT260-PA Model number is located on the bottom-side of your computer. A unique Microsoft® Windows® Product Key is also attached to your notebook as part of the Microsoft® certificate of authenticity.
Q3. No sound.
A3. Check to see that the speaker volume is turned up: Holding the "Fn" key down, tap the "F10" key simultaneously to increase the volume on your computer.
Q4. How long should my Battery last?
A4. Under normal conditions the 4-cell Li-Ion battery of the BT260-PA should last 180 - 240 minutes. To ensure maximum efficiency of your battery, be sure to fully discharge and recharge during use.

Q5. How can I extend my Battery Life?
A5a. Battery life will vary depending on how the notebook is used. To ensure a maximum battery life, check your computer power settings: With your notebook on, click "Start" followed by "Settings" and "Control Panel". Double click the "Power Options" icon. Click the "Power Schemes" folder tab. To maximize battery life choose "max battery" under the "Power Schemes" pull down menu. Additional options may also be enabled.
A5b. Activities such as having your wireless access turned "on" will also discharge the battery at a faster rate.
A5c. However, here are some useful tips on extending your battery life.

Caring for your Batteries
• Always handle batteries carefully.
• Do not short-circuit the battery terminals (that is, do not touch both terminals with a metal object). Do not carry lose batteries in a pocket or purse where they may mix with coins, keys, or other metal objects. Doing so may cause an explosion or fire.
• Do not drop, puncture, disassemble, mutilate or incinerate the battery.
• Recharge batteries only as described in this manual and only in ventilated areas.
• Do not leave batteries in hot locations for more than a day or two. Intense heat can shorten battery life.
• Do not leave a battery in storage for longer than 6 months without recharging it.

Increasing Battery Life
• Power your UMPC BT260 through the AC or optional auto/airline adapter whenever possible.
• If your UMPC BT260 notebook is running on battery power all day, connect it to the AC adapter overnight to recharge the battery.
• Keep brightness to the lowest level comfortable.
• Set the power management for maximum battery life.
• Put your UMPC BT260 notebook in Suspend mode when it is turned on and you are not actually using it.
• Limit your External DVD/CD-RW/CD-ROM access.
• Always use fully charged batteries.
• Turn off Wifi/Bluetooth when not in use.
Q6. Does the UMPC have a CD/DVD Drive?
A6. No CD/DVD drive is included with the system. To transfer files to and from the system, the external optical drive (DVD-RW/CD-RW) or USB memory card reader may be used.
Q7. No Bluetooth and Wifi.
A7. Holding the "Fn" key down, tap the "F2" key simultaneously to on wireless and Bluetooth.
Q8. How do I clean my UMPC?
A8. When it is necessary to clean the plastic case and keyboard, use a soft, lint-free cloth, slightly dampened with a mild detergent solution. Never use alcohol, petroleum-based solvents or harsh detergents to clean the notebook. Also, never spray liquid directly on the computer case, keyboard or screen. Paper towels may scratch the display screen and are not recommended.
Q9. The UMPC seems to be running Slowly then normal.
A9. Too many programs may be open (running) at once.
Q10. What are the Wireless capabilities?
A10. The BT260-PA has 802.11b/g wireless capabilities built-in. To gain wireless access to the Internet, a separate 802.11b or 802.11g wireless router* must be purchased and connected to your broadband modem*.

Q11. What are the Ethernet capabilities?
A11. 10M/100Mbps.
Q12. How do I access the BIOS?
A12. Boot (turn on) the computer while pressing the "F2" key.
Q13. Does the UMPC have a Floppy Disk Drive?
A13. No floppy disk is included with the system. To transfer files to and from the system, the optical drive (DVD-RW/CD-RW) or USB memory card reader may be used.
Q14. How much Memory can the system handle and what type of RAM should I purchase if I wish to Increase My Memory?
A14a. 1 GB Maximum.
A14b. The BT260-PA can handle up to SODIM DDR II 533/677. Only memory modules approved by Blue thunder may be used to replace or upgrade the system memory. Visit the www.dism.com to purchase additional memory.
Q15. What Software Programs come together with the UMPC?
A15. Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center Edition, Windows® Media Player, Windows® WordPad.
Q16. Does the system come with Microsoft® Office®?
A16. No. Microsoft® Office® can be purchased separately from an authorized Microsoft dealer.
Q17. Can the CPU be upgraded?
A17. The BT260-PA comes with a 1.2GHz VIA C&-M and cannot be upgraded.
Q18. There is No Sound heard while playing a DVD (external).
A18. To Listen and View some DVDs properly, additional software may be needed. Free CODEC software can be downloaded from 3rd party suppliers*:

Q19. The computer can not connect to the Internet.
A19. Some Internet Service Providers (ISP) requires changes to the factory Internet settings.
1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click "Tools" in the top menu
3. Click "Internet Options"
4. Click "Connections" tab
5. Click "LAN Settings" button
6. Click (check) the "Automatically Detect Settings" box
7. Click (un-check) the "Use a Proxy Server for your LAN..." box
8. Click the "Okay" button
9. Click the "Okay" button again
10. Click the Refresh Page icon or close Internet Explorer and Open again

The DVD sound setting for Microsoft Media Player may also be configured to increase overall volume:
1. Open Microsoft Media Player by double-clicking the icon on the desktop
2. If the menu bar is not displayed, press and hold the "Ctrl" key on the Step Note keyboard while clicking the "M" key
3. From the menu bar click "Tools"
4. Click "Options"
5. Click the "DVD" tab
6. Click the "Advanced" button
7. Click the "Miscellaneous" tab
8. Click the "Noisy Environment" button

Q20. How long is the Warranty for the UMPC BT260-PA?
A20. The warranty for the UMPC BT260-PA is 1 year parts and 1 year labor.
Q21. Can I Upgrade the Hard Drive on my UMPC BT260-PA?
A21. We strongly recommend that you do not attempt to upgrade the drive yourself. Upgrading the hard drive requires taking the UMPC BT260-PA apart, and if you do so, you void the warranty period.
Q22. The UMPC BT260-PA would not turn on and the charging light just flickers.
A22. If the UMPC BT260-PA would not turn on and the charging light just flickers, it is most likely that you have inadvertently shifted the Hold slider button and your UMPC BT260-PA is on Hold. The Hold function prevents most functions on the UMPC BT260-PA from operating.
Q23. By Using the Stylus, how do you right click?
A23. To right click using the Stylus, press and hold the stylus on the object you want to right click (e.g. Folder, icon or etc.) for at least 3 seconds.
Q24. Does UMPC BT260-PA come with Microsoft Word, Excel or Access?
A24. The UMPC BT260-PA does not come with Microsoft Word, Excel or Access. Nonetheless you can, install them on your own, if you want.
Q25. Can I disable the touch screen on my UMPC-BT260-PA?
A25. You cannot disable the touch screen on the UMPC-BT260. The touch screen on the UMPC BT260-PA uses an active digitizer. Any object that touches the screen will be detected as a pen press and you will get what is known as “vectoring”.
Q26. Does the UMPC BT260-PA have a modem?
A26. No. The UMPC BT260-PA does not have a modem.
Q27. How to protect the LCD touch screen?
A27. Please pay attention for below matters at mounting design of touch panel of LCD module.
1. Do not put a heavy force along the edge of active area.
2. Do not put apply heavy shock on or stretch the touch panel and film surface.
3. Do not put heavy goods on the touch panel.
Q28. How to adjust the UMPC BT260-PA display brightness?
A28. By pressing the Fn keys with other keys, it can simulate all keyboard functions of a regular desktop keyboard. [FN] + [F9]: Increase screen brightness [FN] + [F8]: Decrease screen brightness.
Q29. How to switch the LCD display output to external display device?
A29. By pressing [FN] + [F3]: Switch between LCD or external display device.
Q30. How come the HDD cannot detect in Windows Setup procedure? What should I do?
A30. 1. Power on the device and press F2 to enter the BIOS Setting.
2. Modify the Internal HDD in Main option.
3. Set Type to [auto].
4. Press F10 to save and exit.
Q31. What are the common causes of a computer system failure?
A31. Electronics devices inclusive of PC & Notebook Computers, likewise are subjected to the following environmental conditions, that at times, if it is not taken with good care, will cause hardware to fail in time to come.

Some common causes of the computer system failure include:

A. Power Surges and Brownouts - Computers are susceptible to sudden surges or drops in electrical line voltage. Depending on the importance of the data being processed, efforts should be made to shield the computer from these variations.
Prevention: Electronic devices ranging from inexpensive surge processors to uninterruptible power supplies are available to provide the level of protection required.

B. Temperature - While a personal computer is some what insensitive to its environment, some attention to the environment will pro-long the life and increase the safety of data stored in the machine. Operating your system under extreme temperature will cause system to fail prematurely. Prevention: Ensure enough ventilation, and adequate temperature control.

C. Foreign Materials - Establish and enforce firm, consistent policies regarding the presence of food, drink, smoke, and dust in the computer room. System operating under extreme smoke and dust environment will cause system to breakdown prematurely.
